Gutter Cleaning & Roof Cleaning F.A.Q.
Clogged gutters can lead to all kinds of problems. Cleaning out your home's gutters may seem like a project that can wait, but waiting can create more work and costly repairs. Homes with little-to-no tree coverage can generally get by with one gutter cleaning per year. If your home is surrounded by messy pine trees and oak trees, you may need to clean out your gutters at least twice a year!
You may notice some areas of your gutter begin to overflow when it rains, or your downspouts may not have any water drain out of them. This means you have clogged gutters. Leaves and twigs can build up over time and clog your gutters and downspouts. This means your gutters can overflow and damage the roof, fascia and — even worse — end up along the foundation of your house and cause expensive water damage.
Clogged gutters can cause a variety of problems. If the water isn’t draining properly, you can get water leaking in along the base of your foundation and/or into your basement. Clogged gutters can also get too heavy and crack, come loose, or even fall. In the winter, clogged gutters lead to ice dams, roof leaks, or even roof damage.
Most gutter cleaning companies do not include underground drains with a gutter cleaning service. However, they are able to verify if it is clogged and disconnect the downspout from the drain above the ground. This way you can re-direct the water until you get somebody to snake out the underground drains.
We do not charge extra for securing loose gutter spikes. This service is included in the cost of the gutter cleaning. If there are many loose gutter spikes, we will make note and recommend new hardware.
We clean leaves from the roofing valleys and around the perimeter of the gutter so debris doesn’t funnel straight into the gutter during the next rain. We do not include blowing off the entire roof during gutter cleanings however we can perform this service as a separate add-on.
Solar Panel Cleaning F.A.Q
Yes! Most solar panels require at least an annual cleaning! Preferably by Window Wranglers :)
The accumulation of dirt, debris, bird droppings, pollen, tree sap, hard water and mineral deposits, and other particulates reduces the efficiency of your solar panels - leading to a decline in the amount of power produced.
According to National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the reduction in efficiency due to dirty solar panels (referred to as 'soiling') can amounts to as much as 7% in parts of the United States and as much as 50% in the Middle East. NREL also states, "rain and wind can be enough to scour some dust from PV panels....because PV panels cool down at night and attract morning dew, the dust can go through a process called cementation. The soiling is literally cemented onto the panel."
Weather and climate: In wetter climates, solar panels may only need an annual cleaning, however in dry regions, solar panels should be cleaned more often (at least every six months, depending on how much debris the wind deposits).
Smog and pollution: If smog or pollution is high in your area, clean solar panels as often as monthly. Smog and pollution not only cause deposits on solar panels; the haze in the air will reduce available sunlight to the panels.
Pollen: Seasonal pollen is common from spring through fall. Clean panels at least every six months in areas of high pollen count.
Residue from biotic life: In areas where tree sap and bird droppings are common, remove deposits as soon as you see them to prevent etching.
Preventative maintenance and cleaning will extend the life of your panels and ensure your system runs efficiently. The reduction of energy produced by your system as a result of etched and dirty panels can compound year after year.
Yes, most manufacturers require regular cleanings and preventative maintenance of the system for warranty claims to be considered valid.
Unfortunately, in much the same way that rainwater doesn’t clean built up dirt and grime from a vehicle, it also doesn’t effectively clean solar panels. Unless it regularly rains, it’s unlikely that any dirt that’s been collected on the panels will be washed off – especially if the harsh Arizona sun has baked on tree sap, bird droppings, hard water deposits, and other environmental contaminants onto the panels.
It's important to clean your panels with the proper equipment and correct cleaning products. Your system's owners manual will outline the best method to clean your specific system. Some manufacturers recommend only using your hose to spray off your solar panels, however depending on your well-water or municipal's water quality, mineral and hard water deposits could form and be detrimental to cleaning.
The best time to clean your installation is early morning, late afternoon, or on overcast days. If the Arizona sun is shining bright, the water and cleaning products you use will evaporate quickly, leaving residues which will reduce your panels’ efficiency as much as dirt does.
At Window Wranglers, all of our cleaning products are kid and pet-friendly and biodegradable. We do not use any ammonia or alcohol-based solutions that could harm our environment or loved ones. For a full listing of products used just ask your Window Wrangler service technician.
